universal health coverage

Definition

A form of health insurance that is provided to citizens of a country at no charge. The health care coverage is funded by taxes imposed on the citizens through taxation. People participating in universal health coverage do not have to pay any of their medical costs including fees for prescriptions. Opponents of universal health coverage suggest that it forces people to wait for extended periods of time for major procedures and places an unnecessary tax burden on the country. The United States currently does not have a universal health coverage plan in place.
