wireless application protocol (WAP)
Definition
Proposed standard for viewing webpages on mobile devices such as cell phones and handheld computers. Submitted jointly by Unwired Planet (developers of Handheld Device Markup Language or HDML, a simplified version of HTML), Ericsson, Motorola, and Nokia in January 1998, WAP makes it possible to view webpages on the small LCD screen of devices that use slow processors and narrow bandwidth, and have only a few user-interface capabilities.
